349/365 ............ Shooting Film (by pricklypearbloom)

I’ve been wanting to put film in the old nikon for awhile now, but for some reason fear (?) has been holding me back. I don’t know where that fear comes from with me, but anxiety tends to make me procrastinate on things. Afraid that I don’t know enough about photography to really get decent shots from film. Afraid that without that immediate ability to check the shot, that I’ll get it wrong.

But this week I did it. Put the film in, took a crash course on getting it set as close to what I’m used to shooting at on the digital so that I’m comfortable, since it’s an older camera, some of the settings are in different places, and just started shooting. I can’t wait to see what I get, and try some funky stuff.

i can relate. i’ve had that old borrow nikon sitting in its bag for a year(!) because of the anxiety. i have a ton of film and i just need to get it out and ready for the long weekend. here’s to hoping for some good photos…

You take such amazing pictures. I think they have a very distinctive quality to them – kind of a vintagey look. Can I ask? Do you do any processing in photoshop, or do they come out of the camera looking that fabulous?

I have an old canon ae1 that I adore. And old film, too. And a holga and film that we’ve never used. Must get it all out.

i just did the same thing, tracy! it’s kind of terrifying and exciting at the same time.

That sounds fun! If your pictures come out less wonderful than you expect, take the negatives somewhere else to get developed, just to see. I can almost break down and cry at all the negatives I threw away (every single one) BEFORE I learned how much one developer/printer can totally screw them up. Some of those “bad” pictures from the early days weren’t that bad at all.

there is so much i want to say in response to these last few posts, but i think i’ll put most of it in the long email to you that i keep composing in my head, rather than on the computer :) the most important ones are- that green quilt is so incredibly beautiful, it took my breath away on flickr and again here. your quilting is such an inspiration to me. thank you for that, at a time when it is much needed! and also- i can’t wait to see your film. i know it is going to be good. weirdly, i have the opposite feeling– because i learned photography (such as it was, in photo 101 in college) on my pentax k1000 (almost a dozen years ago now), i am so comfortable with that camera and still fumbly with digital. i think it helps that there are really very few things happening with film, in a technical way. anyway, more later. :) xo
