Who Is That?

January 15, 2008

Psst…

Suspicious

Psssssst!

.

Who is this shiny, white, curvy plastic imposter sitting next to me? Intruder! Sound the alarms! Call the guard!

Oh, dearest old sewing machine, do not fret. I still love you. You have really been remarkably good to me, taken me through good times, iPod cases, a lovely throw blanket, a half finished quilt; and hard times, wonky potholders, binding needles, knotted thread, uneven bobbin winding. But I have tried my best to be your partner, and you, you have done your best for me. I will always appreciate your metal bobbins, your sturdy storage case, your boxy shape, your heavy, cold metal skeleton. You are so vintage, and I love that.

.

But, you see, my mother-in-law reads this blog {Hi Mom Sharon!}, and she noticed when I mentioned that through all of your positive aspects, you refuse to sew more than your one basic stitch. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, truly. For a multitasking girl like myself quite often does not have time to care about a zigzag stitch, yet I wanted one, nonetheless. She had purchased this shiny new machine for herself awhile back, to replace her broken 37 year old machine, but she never got around to using it, and finally, she found the part she needed for her old stitcher. So she gave this Singer to me.

I am so grateful, it is a gift that I never would have expected, and I am so excited to learn to use it, and to grow a little bit more as a sewer. To make coasters, and blankets, and baby toys, and stuffed elephants.

I have learned alot with you, though, old sewing machine. You helped me out with those sweaters, and you never talked back. Stay awhile, with me? I don’t think I can give you up just yet, I have wound bobbins yet to use with you, and perhaps you can still help me along the way, or maybe someone else can learn with you, too, someday.

I see that we are both blessed with generous mother-in-laws who are thoughtful enough to bequeath their crafty daughter-on-laws new sewing machines. May we be so considerate when it becomes our turn!

Wouldn’t it be awesome if computers worked as well as sewing machines – and lasted as long?

Have fun with your new machine! I’ve found for most sewing, a person doesn’t need the fanciest machine in the world. But you can go crazy if the machine doesn’t work well.

BTW, my sewing machine store lady says you should bring a machine in once a year for a tune up…good advice.

Lucky you. My mother-in-law doesn’t even do buttons. When her pants get too big or torn, she tries to staple them (not a joke). So there’s no hope for me… and a Singer like yours.
